Three years ago we had a 60' pine removed that was dead, they ground down the stump but unfortunately we didn't know this all existed. Last fall while working on redoing the garden I uncovered these absolute units for roots, now I need to get it all out.

What are se thoughts on the easiest DIY method?

An Axe, a sawzall, a wheelbarrow, and a lot of manual labor.

I thought pines were known for decaying rapidly. Can you wait? If not, I’d be inclined to rent a mini-ex and go to town.

A Backhoe or mini excavator would help a lot if you have the access and room for it back there. Or as the other guy said a lot of manual labor.

Holy smokes. I’ve never seen pine roots like this.

Rent a stump grinder or pay an arborist.

All of this is nonesense unless you don’t want to put the work in.

If you aren’t afraid of that get a good sawzall, pick axe, shovel, and good power washer. We got one of the highest powered greenworks one at the time maybe five years ago.

Dig out the gaps in the roots with the pick axe drag them out like 10 ft so you have drainage.

Power washer the roots so the dirt and weight fall of so you can get in with the sawzall. Cut sizes you can lift. Move on.

Probably 5 hrs work not crazy save yourself the money of having it professionally done or to rent either a stump grinder and or backhoe.

Stump grinder by a pro… unless you have a month off.

I wouldn’t even rent a stump grinder from Home Depot for this. It would still take too long.

Looks more like you need a palaeontologist

That tree must have been a glorious and strong son of a gun, epic root system
