I didn't expect the reaction it got. I'm that used to seeing it, you forget how monstrous it is. Turns out when getting closer its 3 stems not 2. Obligatory banana for scale.

Bonus pics of the cotoneaster (no idea which type) 3 plants in total, that the clematis was trying to grow over. Its around 32 – 34 years old. Used to be taller & more dense at the top, but i had to wobble around on the top step of a 6ft ladder a few years ago to take the height down.

I know some of them are invasive, however this one has behaved and stayed in the garden where she planted it.

  1. Clematis montana Rubens, single plant, 18 – 20 years old. Located in South Yorkshire.

It gets sun on the back early morning, the front gets sun from about 11am until 6 or 7pm. I think its so old now, not even full sun can stop it. Or maybe full sun is the reason it flowers to much?

It normally starts flowering late April (if its mild) until June. Maybe odd flowers popping up after June.

Bare in winter, then out of nowhere its green and flowering.

I asked if she prunes it, she said very rarely. Only if it get out hand growing on the other shrubs. Mainly just keeps it contained on the left and right.

Its pretty dense on the fence, probably lots of old dead wood, she should have removed and the new is sat on top of the old, but it seems happy enough.

Wow! That’s tremendous. I need a Montana, must remember to get one as I’ve got just the place for it to do its thang. Reddit bonus points for the banana for scale!

Gorgeous! What a mass of blooms 😃

My mum had a lovely big Clematis like that growing all over a fence and pergola but unfortunately the next door neighbour put a load of weedkiller down his side of the fence without thinking and killed it. It had been there for about 25 years 🙁
