Hey y’all. Hoping for some insight.

First time planting onions. All these onions got planted right around March 1st, so haven’t been in the ground even 70 days.

Started from Dixondale farms transplants; the ones flopping over are Texas Early Whites.

Their website and others say these should be ready in about 90 days, so it feels early? Or maybe I’m misunderstanding how that timeline works.

Any help appreciated!

  1. Mine are looking about the same, although I planted earlier. I wait until most of the tops fall over.

  2. You also don’t seem to have a lot of bulbing so I’d wait as long as possible.

  3. More bulbed than mine from January 😕 I clearly didn’t give them enough nutrients or the right kind.

  4. I’ve always heard you wait until they look like they died.

The bulbing and dying back process is triggered by day length. The goal of planting in December is to get as much green growth time in before bulbing. More leaves is more layers so bigger bulbs.
