The Okanagan Xeriscape Association (OXA) spring plant sale is set for Saturday, May 9, 840 Old Vernon Rd. in Kelowna, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year, the sale will feature a range of related information booths and plants for sale, from FireSmart to Make Water Work, and from the native nursery XEN, toWild Bloom Nursery, as well as OXA’s diverse selection of plants – some of them new cultivars.

On hand as well, will be Okanagan Master Gardeners and other xeriscape experts who can answer your questions and provide advice on your landscape issues.

There’ll also be a kids’ planting activity corner.

With another drought season forecast, selecting drought-tolerant perennials and making the decision to transition at least a sector of your landscape to xeriscape is a sensible and environmentally-smart decision to make.

Conserving water in the arid Okanagan in a year like this, is essential.

For a list of some of the plants that OXA will have available at the sale, go to the website www.okanaganxeriscape.org.

There, you can also learn all about adopting the seven principles of xeriscape and making the move to conserve water used on your landscape.

Enjoy the blog articles on alternatives to the water-thirsty, flammable cedar hedge; using native plants; ground covers; ornamental grasses; FireSmart plants; biodiversity; xeriscape lawn alternatives; and the basics of planning, design, planting, soil and yard care.

It’s only $35 to join OXA and receive discounts at local nurseries as well as access to individualized mentoring opportunities, early access to plant sales, newsletters and opportunities to meet like-minded plant lovers.

OXA executive director and gardening columnist Sigrie Kendrick said, “Xeriscape isn’t about bare gravel and cactus. It’s about gardening intelligently, choosing the right plant for the right place, reducing waste, and creating landscapes which reflect the real ecology of where we live.”
