Are there any drawbacks to adding a little hat to my ripining fruit to protect from some direct sunlight?

Don’t really need to. Fruiting plants need ac lot of sun though, so don’t cover up too much

Maybe you aren’t in an area where it rains but that wouldn’t last long where I am. Also never had too much sunlight on my tomatoes.

Fruiting plants need lots of sun. If leaves are getting crispy, they need water more frequently. Sometimes potted plants need water twice a day in the heat.

From experience the leaves wilt during high heat and comes back to normal afterwards.
If its getting crispy, you have a watering issue.

Please do not shade the fruit as it needs the sun

They don’t need protection from sun, they’ll take as much as they can get. The drawback is that they’re getting less sun.

I’d recommend a 50% shade cloth when daytime temps are consistently in the 90s.

I would worry about the heat radiating from the bottom more. Personally I would raise the pots off the concrete

    Yes—they don’t get direct sunlight

I do the opposite and prune the leaves around the tomatoes to give them more sunlight.

The question you should be asking is are there any benefits to covering your ripening tomatoes, and the answer is no.
