This eastern red cedar had alot of dead branches and the main leader had snapped at some point before I dug it up, wondering what I could do from this point to make it not look so stupid

You removed many branches which I think should’ve been kept. In my opinion if you can easily count the number of branches on a tree (unless it’s a mini or mame, smaller than shohin) then it’s too few of branches. It’s also worth noting this trunk needs a lot of growing out still before you make major styling decisions

So with all that said, I think all it needs is hands off so it can regrow foliage. You want a big bush with long whips and runners. That’s your sign that the tree is properly ready to be “styled” again

In the meantime, definitely wire movement into “keep” branches before they get too thick to bend, but try to keep in mind those are small steps towards a better end goal. Nobody’s able to create a tree that doesn’t look at least a little stupid after an amateur styling if the time and work isn’t put in up front to properly set up the material for that 1st big “it’s starting to look like something now” styling

dont remove too much next time… hopefully u didnt remove too many roots. But put it like this, removing branches hurts trees ( how much pain can they take?) removing roots hurts trees ( same, how much pain can they take?) now with those two questions in mind you will be more conscience next time you grab or work on a tree…. you can do either or and the one NOT worked on can be done next season. But DEF never go all out on one of your two options.

if you have a bonsai society meeting close by or a nursery that has classes, you should go to them. You will benefit more from those classes than anything.
