I’m attempting to germinate seeds from Adansonia digitata (African baobab) and want to make sure I follow the correct propagation method from the beginning.
This is my first time germinating seeds, so I’m looking for advice from anyone with experience growing this species or other caudex-forming plants.
Materials / setup:
Adansonia digitata seeds (or pod material — photos attached)
Indoor growing environment (New York, USA)
Basic seed-starting supplies
Heat mat available if needed
Standard nursery pots / containers
What I’m trying to determine:
Best method for breaking dormancy (scarification vs. soak duration, etc.)
Recommended germination medium (soil mix, drainage, moisture level)
Ideal temperature range for germination (especially indoors)
Light requirements during germination phase
Common failure points for this species (rot, mold, failed germination, etc.)
Goal:
I’m aiming to maximize germination success and follow best practices rather than trial-and-error, especially since this is my first attempt with this species.
Any experienced advice or propagation protocols for Adansonia digitata would be greatly appreciated.
