I transplanted this rock rose on 4/26 from another flower bed and botched it by losing all of the soil off the root ball in the transfer. The wilting has been increasing despite the rains. Should i prune it back or would that make things worse?

It’s just transplant shock, will likely be fine in two weeks or so. Not much you can do — if it dies, it dies.

  2. Cut it back substantially so the roots are not trying to support all those leaves and branches while it is settling in. I’d go 1/2 to 2/3 back, but leave some leaves. Water it frequently while it’s establishing.

I would try pruning back some of the foliage. There are probably too many leaves for the plant to support until the roots catch up.

  4. I would maybe prune it to about half the size, pull away the mulch from the base, and keep it watered (I know it’s been raining, but still).

It’s likely that the roots are having a tough time getting enough water to the plant due to the root ball disturbance. So, even with all the rain, it’s likely not getting enough moisture. I would plan on watering a little ever other day until you see it to start recovering.

In addition, give it a little nutrition. A balanced 10-10-10 getting should go a long way to helping it out. If you have some Super Thrive, or other plant vitamins, add some of them as well. This will help the plant repair and start growing the roots out.
