Damn. Don’t let my wife see this.

Glad your property is ok. What all was in there?

  2. This is why you don’t have it near buildings people

Whoah! The often-talked-about, seldom-seen compost fire! I’m glad it doesn’t seem to have spread. What was in the pile, and how hot did it get before combusting?

A refreshing change from all the “how do I get more heat in my compost” posts

I like the little cross. It’s like Satans burial mound

Based on the cross I see near the pile, its apparent you had an eastern compost vampire try to roost in your pile. The cross is a nice deterrent, but id also recommend you up your garlic consumption. Garlic in the pile will keep them from thinking its home instead of bursting into flames unexpectedly.

This sometimes happens with wet straw / hay on farms. Barns have burned down like this.

But I guess that it comes with the territory,

Thick layer of fresh cut grass on the top?

So… How do you prevent this from happening? Watering it? Turning it over more frequently? Adding sand??

How bad did it smell? Were you present for the burn or were you away from home?!

  12. HighColdDesert

Yikes! Can you tell us what all was in the pile, and how long it had been there? So we can learn from your experience?

What the fuckkkk i had no idea this could happen, holy shit💀

A few years back I was woken up in the middle of the night by the fire department. Apparently my neighbor was letting their dog out and smelled smoke. Compost pile was smoldering. By the time the fire department got there it was just a pile of ash. First thing they asked me was if I had a burn pile. Nope. Just compost.

This is one of my fears. This is why I’ve always kept my compost in bins, so at least if it combusts, it’s trapped inside of a bin and has barely any oxygen to keep burning.

lol, that would have been a heart starting event. I often neglect to turn mine and found it’s smouldering down deep but as yet I’ve never had a spontaneous combustion. Pure luck on my part.

I am impressed. Usually that only happens with very large piles! Good reminder.
