WAILUA — The Kauai High School Foundation distributed $106,000 in scholarships on Saturday during the Kauai High School Senior Luau held at Smith’s Tropical Paradise.
The 40 recipients were selected through the collaboration of the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee, chaired by Leland Tottori, and the high school’s counselors.
Tottori said the foundation’s scholarship program includes two programs: a community college and trades program that covers two-year programs, and one for university and four-year college programs.
Funding is through donations from the community, alumni of Kauai High School, and other family donors.
Primary contributors for this year’s program included $35,000 from Milt and Debbie Valera of the Class of 1960; $30,000 from the Pauline and Nicholas Street Charitable Fund, renamed the Street Family Charitable Fund; $20,000 from Florence and Tad Yoshikawa of the Class of 1956; and numerous others, Tottori said.
Pauline Street passed away earlier in the year, said Nicholas Street, who was present with his two daughters for the distribution. He announced the renaming of the fund and said that even if anything unexpected should happen, it will continue.
The Street Family Charitable Fund also provides scholarship funding for Kapaa, Kauai and Waimea high schools and Island School, and contributes to the Kauai Community College Nursing Department.
