Open to feedback / advice as I’m making this all up as I go along. Not sure what to do next except wait and let root. I feel like I messed up with the top of the cutting and I’m worried it will rot up there.

Any tips on air layering? I want to try it on an especially interesting branch of a maple tree I have

it won’t rot at the top, it will just die back down to the next lower node where it decides to grow from. After a season, you’ll see more clearly where that is and you can tidy up the “stump” at the top with a bit of carving, and away you go!

if you want the tree to grow higher with some good taper, then you would take that top growth and wire it upwards to become the new leader (you can’t do that once it grows too thick, but don’t break it when it’s too tiny and delicate still…)
