I just moved into a new house. There were 8 of these 5-6 foot trees in backyard. Area gets good sunlight from the east for most of the day, but sunlight from the back (west) is blocked.
What might have caused this significant browning and can they be nursed back to health? Prior owners had a swing set that might have blocked additional sunlight.
4 trees were completely brown and I had them removed. 1 is in rough shape but has some green so we left it. The other 3 are mostly green on the outside but inner parts are browning. I went through today to shake/pull off any completely loose brown foliage.
I live in MA and PH levels tested fine.

They just do that. They don’t establish and thrive well. Usually water stress, or planted too deeply. Deer also love them.
Rip them out, plant something better
Depending on on your climate zone, might I suggest Nandina? It’s colorful and produces a striking hedge. Arborvitae always seems to have issues. Nandina won’t give you dramatic height but since it’s evergreen, you will enjoy the colors all seasons.
