May is the last month you’ll have this year to plant one pretty flower if you want it to bloom. With summer rolling around fast and warmer weather on the way, you’ll no doubt want to make sure your garden is looking its best.

This month is a busy time for the gardeners with plenty of jobs to do but planting one pretty flower should absolutely be on your to-do list – or risk leaving it too late. Now that the frost has passed, Dobbies says planting cornflowers must be done in May. It warns: “This is your last chance to sow!”

Cornflowers are annual wildflowers which, as experts from Gardeners World note, are pleasingly easy to grow. They tend to shoot up quickly, bursting into eye-catching blue and purple ruffled blooms in summer.

While that classic cornflower blue is the most recognisable, you can now find them in pink, red and white shades too.

They’re best planted in an upright setting, making them a great choice for pots. Gardeners should place them somewhere sunny with well-drained soil, and they’ll happily get on with things.

Aside from a bit of deadheading to encourage more blooms, they don’t need too much. Simply sow the seeds directly onto the soil, rake over lightly, and wait – flowers usually appear within 10 weeks.

But these aren’t the only flowers you’ll need to plant this month.

You should also make sure to plant sunflowers, zinnias, primroses, wallflowers, pansies and daisies.

Dobbies also says: “There’s still time to plant lavender in containers in May if you haven’t done so already.

“Planting lavender in containers means you can move it around your garden wherever and whenever you’d like.

“Sit it next to a doorway or somewhere it’ll catch a light summer breeze, so its rich floral scents are carried through your garden and home.”

By planting these flowers now, you’ll be able to ensure your garden is filled with bright blooms all summer long.
