I’m in Newfoundland, so a later start than most others. Should my crates stay on this concrete or move to the grass or does it matter?!

    Smart idea with the crates!
It doesn’t matter too much if its on the ground or the pavers, but the pavers will warm up the soil faster than on grass. Keep an eye on how moist the soil is too, it can dry up pretty fast.
    Good luck this year!

I’d stick them on the grass so they don’t get too hot and dried out so quickly and also if the roots need more room they can grow into the ground

Fill them to the top. Go where there is the most sun. Concrete can get very hot, so grass would be better.

I kept my containers off the concrete mostly because of how hot that stuff gets, if you can’t even put bare feet on it, imagine how your plant is gonna feel laying there.

What do you plan to grow in those milk crates exactly? I tried a tomato and got exactly one fruit. But my herbs seemed to like them, may try beans next.

I might consider putting them up on little feet (1/2″ etc) to insure decent drainage. I use 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottoms and noticed that despite the holes, water was pooling underneath.

But otherwise, very cool. Wish I could find some milk crates.

I planted in crates last year and we had them slightly elevated on bricks over grass. Not sure if it affected them or not. We are doing the same thing this year, we have potatoes growing in them and they are super happy so far.

Great idea! I would love to see updates. I would fill them up, only leaving a tiny space. Soil will settle and the less soil, the quicker it dries out.
