this is a huge cherry bark oak in my front yard that i think has grown from seed. i wanted to remove the mound of dirt around the tree caused by years of ant beds and the tree pushing up dirt for aesthetic reasons and mulch around it, but i’m worried i got way too enthusiastic and carried away.
is this as bad as i feel like it is?
if so, what can i do now to ensure the best for this beauty? i love it very much!
last picture shows you how big it is.

This is literally perfect, you exposed the flare. I would add a 3” mulch layer with a 5’ radius around it again and ensure that the mulch does not touch the root flare but covers the roots you have uncovered. Stop the mulch right about where the flare starts ascending to the stem! Beautiful tree
Also, those small roots that are wrapping the tree in the 2nd to last photo, remove any roots like that surrounding the tree! Depending on where you are, I would maybe wait to do this because of oak wilt, not sure of your location and if this is an issue in your area
