The sliding glass door in my kitchen/dining nook area faces a very "meh" fence and my neighbors window. I was thinking about planting a native or non invasive vine that would grow along the fence and create some privacy. The problem is that I have a concrete pathway. I tried looking at containers, but they can't be too wide because the pathway is only about 3 feet wide. I was told I could try cutting out an 8 x 8 inch square in the concrete so that I could plant the vine directly into the ground. Does anyone have suggestions on how to cut concrete that size?

does it have to be planted right there? could you plant it off the concrete (to the left) and train the vine to cover the fence?
Why not a small raised planter instead?
Concrete saw 16″ blade from home Depot. Can definitely diy but can be messy and definitely back breaking if you don’t do heavy labor regularly.
Maybe an 8×8 container would take the same space and much less work.
Just get a window box or something as the planter. They are like 3ft wide and 6-8 inches deep, perfect for a vine or two. Do NOT cut concrete for that… No offense but that’s excessive.
Just use a pot. The soil will be better, anyway.
Plant it to the left and guide it as it grows
Respectfully, Here’s what you could do. Get a concrete hole drill bit to bore into the concrete. A one inch hole is sufficient because the roots will grow through into the soil under the concert pad. Clean it out and back fill with potting soil. Place a nice clay pot over the hole where the drain hole aligns with the hole in the concrete. If not clay, then ensure it is light colored to reflect as much heat as possible. Otherwise, the roots may overheat which can kill the plant. Affix the pot in place with adhesive caulk. Mix about two parts potting soil to perlite to keep the roots cool. Keep your soil moist by using a drip bottle or other failsafe. String twine or sisal along the fence to promote vine climbing and adhesion. Enjoy the view.
Rent a concrete saw.

I’d just get a 20 gal grow bag, put it on the side, and grow the vine over the fence.
Make sure you have a good idea of how much the vine will spread. Virginia creeper will escape and will try to cover everything in the neighborhood. Personally, I love Spanish flag vine for its beauty and so far never had any pest problems but it grows out from the fence. Grew it by my front door and was constantly pruning it so the wispy tendrils didn’t slap us every time trying to come in.
I’ve hit this vine that I keep eradicating,… it comes back. Then it shows up down the fence line… I feel it has encircled the yard along the fence line and is just waiting for me to pass…. Not today el vino !
Plant it where the rocks are and train it to go where you want.
Put it in a pot, Gomer
If you use a pot, you can kill it when you decide to. Otherwise they are basically invincible lol
Highly highly recommend using a planter instead! There are lovely metal, concrete, and wood ones these days. Vines can be beautiful but also awful if left to roam free.

a lady constantly pulling invasive vines from previous owners out the ground and off trees 😆
If you’ve got room for an 8″x8″ hole in the concrete, you have room for an 8×8 planter. Or an 8 x 24″ planter for that matter. Also you should look into faux ivy panels. It’s designed for applications like yours.
