I've been cutting my lawn for a while now, but this year I decided to also go all in and not pay for a company to treat it.

I live in FL and have St. Augustine grass. I started the season mowing 3 times before laying down Scotts Southern Turf rebuilder that is high in nitrogen and specifically for St augustine grass. I did cut down the wheels of my scotts spreader so that the fertilizer won't hit the top of the wheels. I also sprayed my entire yard with Triazicide twice within the span of the first month to hopefully stop the grubs. I got a soil tester to check the pH and moisture and I water 2 to 3 times a week depending on the rain.

However, despite all of this my yard looks terrible compared to last year. What am I missing here?

Definitely looks like you’re striping with the Scott’s spreader even if you did modify it. I filled my wheels with foam and I still get some stripping. I’ll prob buy an echo soon but I like to spoon feed so the spreader works for most of the other stuff I spread.

In Florida I would assume you need to watch out for fungus with the humidity. I think the lawn care nut has a bunch of videos, he’s from Florida.

Keep in mind im in Minnesota, so very different grass up here. But with some of the bare dirt, can you easily stick a screwdriver about six inches in the soil? Maybe compacted soil if so.

Listen buddy, as someone who takes care of his own yard/ gardens/ does other landscaping it’s clear to me you’re showing your yard too much time, attention and love. The secret to a beautiful yard is to try to kill it. Throw rocks at it, piss on it, spit on it, call it a little bitch it loves all that shit

With small yards it’s usually just easier to put down the fertilizer by hand so you know you aren’t putting too much down. Pretty clear signs that your spreader was putting out too much. It’s not worth fucking with those spreaders. They are cheap junk for the most part
