    Sorry for quick drawing!
    I’d love this little area!
If it was my place I’d either completely rid it of grass and put weed sheet down then fill with gravel adding nice pathing slabs as a path towards the gate or leave the grass but make a wavy border either side and dig in path slabs still. Fill the border with loose stones or gravel. (After planting)
Then I’d get arches and attach them to the fence and plant some planters either side of the arch. You can get quite a few shade climbers that work well. And I’d add some fairy light or little lights to the arches. (Solar)
I’d also in the stone gravel bored find little plants that are annual and grow in shade and put them in between the arches/climbers.
Once all plants in fill then with the loose stones.
Keeps it clean, pretty looking and flowered

Depends. Is there a gate at the end of that, or is it the dead end other end of the yard?

If it’s the gate access, do a simple paver path. Don’t put plants on both sides. Do one side only. It’s easier, easier to maintain, and it’ll actually fit.

If it’s the “shitty dead end side”, put rubber pavers down and just do the whole thing, and use it as misc storage for things like your outdoor ladder and such. That’s what mine is. Can’t do much with the area. I have some “not as deep” plastic small sheds I put back there.

Hosta lined path that leads to a dwarf Japanese maple or service berry or dogwood or something that will do well in less sun. Local nursery should be able to give a suggestion. Hostas are super easy to grow. Something tall at the back will seem like a destination for the path and will do a little foreshortening of the space.

Pavers and a narrow shed for storage

There’s a dark side to removing the grass and putting in rock. You have a low maintenance area, doing that will make it higher maintenance because you’ll have to be diligent about weeds and grass. I learned the hard way with rock areas.

Looks like a great place if you wanted a seating area… like a fine spot to veranda where you could run a skeeto net- if you have night skeeters- maybe some large pavers, some big rocks, a big rocking papasan chair or two, a little one of those fire tables, a couple pots of shade friendly plants or vines that would climb your veranda…
Looks like a great place for a little quiet time. ☺️

Shade plants and maybe some stepping stones or mulch would work well. Could also add a small bench or something to make it feel intentional

  8. Patio stone walkway. My personal opinion.

    Hortensia might like it there

Honestly if you don’t really ever use it and want the lowest maintenance possible….. can you just leave it as grass? When it comes to maintenance there’s literally nothing easier than mowing
