Yesterday I ate a tiny piece of the root thinking it was carrot. Probably about the size of a piece of Mike and Ike candy, maybe a little smaller. It was sweet and delicious. I thought it smelled like carrot at the time. I picked a much larger piece today but figured I should verify. Not eating any more!!

That is not a carrot plant by a long shot.
Yes it’s hemlock. I don’t know what to tell you.
Maybe don’t handle a plant with bare hands if it could be one that causes skin damage?
If you can get a closer pic of the stem, that’ll help a lot with ID
You should verify before eating any of it.
Please go to the hospital
Looks like poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) to me.
Yes. This is 100% poison hemlock. The not fuzzy stem and scattered purple spots are very characteristic for poison hemlock. Please don’t eat random plants without knowing what they are ❤️🩹
Edit: The roots and the seed are the most poisonous part so please go to the ER
please stop eating things before you know what they are instead of asking reddit could be dead rn
OP are you OK?
What is with people just eating some goddamn thing they found and can’t identify?
Please go to the ER! Hope the best for you <3
Do not forage for wild carrots
This gotta be a shitpost.
Of all the many “is this hemlock” posts I have ever seen, most of which are nos, this seems the most obvious yes. But the fact that you describe it as sweet and delicious instead of musty and bitter, and that you ate it yesterday and experienced no illness…? The poison in hemlock is fast acting. You’d have been sick within hours. In any case you should be en route to the ER.
Here’s a case study of two people who really did eat C. maculatum and recovered: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12005235/
Yes and the toxicity peaks in early spring, you can call poison control. If you are it yesterday you’re probably fine bc symptom onset is rapid.
Hemlock poisoning usually shows symptoms pretty quickly from what I’ve read. Are you 100% sure this is the same plant you ate yesterday? Seek medical attention either way.
Darwin checking in, all is well.
You gotta be trolling
If there is one thing I’ve learned form this sub, it’s that carrots do not eff around.
Hemlock usually acts within a few hours from what I’ve read, and even a tiny amount of the plant is deadly, if you’re posting this the next day,
Did you make yourself vomit or take any charcoal or something ? Did you feel any weakness in breathing ?
Never eat anything that looks like a carrot unless you planted a carrot there
TIL there’s an edible hemlock tree and a poisonous hemlock plant
Wikipedia says “The roots of young, first-year plants contain only traces of poison or none at all” and also that those growing in shady or cloudy conditions are less poisonous than those grown in a lot of sun. The poison tends to act pretty quickly, it’s not like poison mushroom where you have a “walking dead” phase.
Obviously you should still call poison control and follow their instructions but there seems to be fairly little reason for panic. You already learned to never do that again.

Smooth move, Socrates.
