Home Bargains has recently added a new decorative feature to its outdoor collection, which it claims turns British gardens into a “peaceful retreat” for wildlife. For some animals, making this £20 investment could be a lifeline.

A spokesperson for the store said: “Add a charming touch to your garden with the Jardin Speckled Bird Bath, designed to attract birds while enhancing your outdoor space with its stylish speckled finish. Perfect for nature lovers who want to create a peaceful retreat.” The plastic bird bath comes in two different colour options – navy blue and deep green. Both versions cost £19.99 each and can be bought in Home Bargains’ stores or ordered online and delivered directly to homes.

The bath stands 55cm tall and has a bowl measuring 44.5cm, offering plenty of space for birds that need to clean or drink to come and visit gardens. There are plenty of outdoor options available at Home Bargains leading into summer.

There are similar options available elsewhere for keen “nature lovers”. Dunelm has an offer on this Fallen Fruits Small Terracotta Birdbath (worth £24) and B&Q offers this £77 Terrastyle Glazed Bird Bath.

Dunelm’s “100% terracotta” design is much shorter than the Home Bargains style (only standing at 22cm tall), so it could benefit from being placed on a table or other surface. Shoppers did claim it was “beautiful in every way”, though, with one suggesting it “blends in nicely with flower pots”.

B&Q’s version (costing £57 more) offers birds “a warm welcome to your garden”, and the store suggests that it adds “a tranquil finishing touch to any garden space”. Although taller than Dunelm, B&Q’s 48cm height is still shorter than Home Bargains’ option.

Why are bird baths beneficial?

According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), a bird bath can be a vital source of drinking water – not just for cleaning. A spokesperson said: “Many people put food out for birds, but fewer provide a regular supply of clean water.

“Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Bird baths are particularly important during winter, when natural sources may be frozen, and in dry conditions that occur mainly during summer.”

They added that water to bathe in is equally important for birds to maintain the health and quality of their feathers. The RSPB spokesperson said: “Dampening the feathers loosens the dirt and makes the feathers easier to preen.”
