Nutsedge? I’ve used “Ortho Nutsedge Killer” twice on top of “Ortho WeedClear” (once). The first application was 2 weeks ago. Only this weed keeps growing. Any ideas what this is what and what should I do to get rid?

  1. This looks like orchard grass at first glance. It is definitely a grass however and as such, sedge treatments will not with.

If you have a good bit, I like Meso 4 sc select. It is the only thing Ive ever used that is selective with bermuda and crabgrass.

When I moved into my house, I was hand pulling them and they kept coming back. My buddy who does landscaping told me about it. It takes about 3 weeks and acts as a pre emergent where they don’t grow back. Leaves will turn white.

    It’s also sold as toracity.

Looks like Dallisgrass. Certainty should take it out easily but it will take several weeks to fully die out. I recommend the “generic” version of Certainty since it’s quite a bit cheaper. It seems expensive up-front but it will last you years if you’re just spot-treating weeds.

For the generic you can search “Sertay Herbicide” on Amazon.

Pull it by hand. Fill hole with top soil. It looks like it could be Johnson grass, hard to tell.

I just put my gardening gloves on, carefully get my fingers around every last bit of the weed, then wriggle/rip/twist/tug until I hear the satisfying pop of the roots. Then I take a huge bite like I’m Danerys eating the horse heart.

It’s fescue clumps. Common in new(er) sod.

    Pre-emergant.

Celsius is an amazing multi control.

Dalliagrass and only thing that will kill it in big box store is non-selective herbicide (which kills everything)

Or can try Trail packets of Celsius WG on Amazon.

  8. It isnt nutsedgr or dallis grass. I know what dallis grass looks like.

Just spray a bit of roundup just on it. The bermuda sod will quickly fill back in over summer

It looks like the broomsedge in my yard

That’s called a shadow…they’re hard to get rid of because they’re caused by the sun.

Clumping fescue. Pull it and make sure to get the rhizome too or it’ll grow back. It looks like a white thread coming from the root base

I know Wilson Fisk took this picture. I just can’t prove it.

  13. rambocommando

Looks like dallisgrass, so either glyphosate or dig it out. There’s no selective control for cool season grass that I know of

Certainty or msma should kill it. Getting rid of grassy weeds in Bermuda is fairly easy, but you have to be willing to spend a little more than what the big box stores carry. And no it’s not nutsedge or dallis grass. There are many agricultural weeds that look alike but the right selective herbicide for Bermuda, it should knock it out

If your primary turf is Bermuda then Tribute Total will smoke it. Go mid rate with surfactant, retreat in 2 weeks, it’ll be gone.

  16. la_descente

Just dig them out. Its not that hard.

Or get one of the Grandpa weed removers

  17. Poke_WOmon

Get a weed fork, push in the soil near the base of the clump about 4-5” deep, pry it up from below while grasping the clump near the base, wiggle and rotate with your hand as you pry up from underneath and pull out the whole root bunch. Wallah, it’s done and won’t come back. Chemicals take too long and are a PITA.

  18. Fit_addendm

Definitely not sedge, I’d use Celsius or certainty and hit it once every 2 weeks til it’s gone(I’m a spray tech) or you can probably pull it

Only way I’ve been able to get rid of them is by hand pulling them

This is not Yellow nutsedge. Yellow nutsedge is very easy to identify by rolling the stem between your fingers, it has a triangular stem! It spreads by the root and takes special herbicides to control selectively in your yard. I would vote orchardgrass but would need a closeup to identify.

No chemicals will kill it and not your grass, so as others said dig it up and reseed. Roundup and reseed would work too. Then set your mower taller so your yard is more lush, it’ll choke out orchardgrass as it germinates.

  21. cchheez

Don’t let it grow tall and create seeds. If you have seeds already, bag it when mowing or it’ll spread quickly. Pull as much as you can. Have your preferred grass choke this out. Good luck

It’s broomsedge, MSMA will get rid of it.
