
That thing sat there ignored for weeks. Suddenly birds discovered it. A lot. Now, I fill the thing (holds probably 5-8 cups of seeds) and it's empty in a day or two (it's not squirrels, I have a baffle in the pole so they can't reach it – they just eat the seeds on the ground that the birds drop)
The smaller seed one lasts longer, but that green one
just gets decimated. They better not fill up on the damn seed, I need them eating bugs!
It's good to be popular I guess?

That’s about the same rate as ours.
Our approach is if we see a healthy insect population outside, we don’t put seed out, just water. If serious drought starts to set in and most of the insects have gone underground to keep cool or it’s cold enough for there to be not many insects, we put seed out. You want birds to eat insects first, better for them due to higher protein and of course natural insect population control. If seed is available, they’ll always eat that first because it’s just easier.
