Help!!!

I bought this ponytail palm from Facebook marketplace so I've no idea how long it was in its pot for/previous light conditions etc…

I went to repot it today but saw that its condition was 10x worse than I expected. It seems that about 90% of its roots were completely rotten, and the base itself is a really crazy shape and also feels pretty soft in places.

I've cut away all the squishy roots and cleaned it as best I can, but is it likely that it'll survive? I've just never seen a base be so misshapen.

I've read that I should let it air dry for 1-2 days and then repot I'm cactus soil with perlite, but then not to water it for about a week.

Will this be enough for it to bounce back? Is there anything else I can do?

TIA
