If you’re dreaming of a lush, flower-filled garden, you might assume it requires countless hours of upkeep. However, there are numerous plants that demand very little attention, reports the Express.

These seven varieties are low maintenance and, according to Chris Bonnett, founder of gardeningexpress.co.uk, some even “thrive on neglect”.

He said: “Many of them prefer dry conditions and don’t need constant watering or feeding to look their best.

“Choosing hardy plants is a great way to enjoy a colourful and vibrant garden without the pressure of keeping up with lots of maintenance. It’s also a more sustainable option, as it can help reduce water usage during warmer weather.”

Lavender

A quintessential English favourite, lavender’s stunning purple blooms and intoxicating fragrance make it a superb garden border or eye-catching shrub.

Thriving in full sun and highly resistant to drought, it’s the ideal choice for those who occasionally forget to water their plants.

Cosmos

These effortlessly grown annuals produce delicate daisy-like blooms throughout the entire summer season.

They flourish in poor-quality soil and require minimal attention — often flowering more abundantly when left to their own devices.

Marigolds

Robust and sun-loving, these vivid red and orange blooms revel in heat and dry conditions. They require no deadheading to keep flowering continuously.

Beyond being low maintenance, marigolds are also well regarded as an excellent companion plant, thanks to their natural pest-repelling qualities.

Ferns

Once established in shaded spots, ferns demand minimal upkeep.

They flourish in moist, protected locations where other plants find it difficult to survive and will prosper with hardly any attention.

Thyme

This hardy, drought-tolerant herb thrives in nutrient-poor soil and bright conditions. It performs brilliantly in pots, flower beds or rockeries.

Rosemary

Like thyme, rosemary prefers arid soil and direct sunlight. It’s extremely robust, requires minimal attention once settled and can even withstand dry spells.

Petunias

These vibrant flowers are remarkably tough and handle heat well, along with the odd missed watering session.
