In his weekly Jamie’s Little Allotment feature, Jamie Marsh talks of his love for compost…
This week’s column is going to be a little bit different to usual.
If you’ve ever read one of my weekly gardening pieces, you’ve probably heard me talk, quite excitedly, about compost. Well, that love for compost – especially making my own – has led me into something new and exciting.
Our columnist Jamie Marsh has become a Norfolk County Council Master Composer volunteer
When I go on about compost and how good it is for your garden, what I’m really saying is this: if you grow vegetables, plant bulbs, or buy plants, homemade compost is one of the best things you can give them.
I try to get that message across here, and I talk about it a lot on social media, but I thought there must be another way to spread the word. And it turns out, there is.
I’ve recently become a Norfolk County Council Master Composter volunteer. The idea is that we encourage people across Norfolk to compost their kitchen and garden waste at home.
Homemade compost is one of the best things you can give your plants and veg
It’s the most environmentally-friendly way of dealing with it. Instead of throwing it away, you turn it into something useful, and in time, you end up with compost that’s like black gold for your veg beds and flower borders.
I’m really looking forward to meeting some of you at shows and events across the area. One of those will be the RHS Sandringham Flower Show, from July 22 to 26. There’ll be several of us chatting about the hows, the whys, and where to start with composting.
We’ll be doing demonstrations, interactive activities, and even letting you peek at the microbial life in compost through a microscope, something I can’t wait to show you.
But it’s not just shows. We give talks to gardening clubs, presentations to schools and local groups, and yes, we’ll even do home visits. If you need some one-to-one advice right in your garden, we’ll come to you.
We’ve jumped into the 21st century too, with online sessions so you can join from home, wherever you are. Our next online introduction to composting meeting is May 6 at 7pm.
Book your slot here, it’s all free by the way https://www.ticketsource.com/booking/select/yjwwlbvlvqoxmaster
If you want to find out where and when we’ll be out and about, or to get more information, you can check out the Norfolk Master Composter website https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/article/42719/Master-composters
The programme is supported by Garden Organic, an organisation that’s at the heart of composting and organic growing across the UK. They help us all become better composters.
So if you’ve thought about composting, or you’re already doing it but want more, come and have a chat if you see us around. And as always, if you’ve got any questions or just fancy letting me know what you’ve been up to in your garden, drop me an email at: jamieslittleallotment@gmail.com
