I’ve already done composting before but using an old open basket without lid and it was on the ground.

Now that I moved to EU and living in the 2nd floor of a house, I want to start composting again but on the balcony with a lid. The bottom part doesn’t have holes (so I could move it easier if needed), but all sides have.

My question is: Is it better to put nets on the holes to not let flies go in or just leave it open because they also help the process? 🤔

I don’t want to bother the landlord below us just in case the flies would be a problem. The balcony is also next to our main bedroom and work room and we air out every day (lüften).

My holes aren’t that big so I didn’t use mesh or screen. I have more holes but smaller, I used a drill bit

I’d only use mesh or screen on yours if you end up with something like a rodent issue. Most bugs I welcome
