What are the steps I need to take to be able to successfully seed a decent lawn in this ? Do I need to remove even more soil and replace with top soil? Or add in some compost ?

I have recently had an area which was full of brambles cleared and am hoping to seed a new lawn on it .

After it was cleared and levelled, it’s become apparent it’s quite stoney and still has some roots in it. The area I live in is very chalky

Please note it hasn’t rained for about a month in the area, so ground is rock hard and very dry – southern England

You need to do what we did when younger and last generations of parents and grandparents did.

For gardens and farm, plow and pick and till and pick . Multiple passes with plow or tiller and then handpicking out all the rocks. We would pick rocks until darkness fell.

For lawns, one pass minimum with a tiller and hand pick the rocks. A second pass is better.

Go to your local agri and have the soil tested.

Add lime, fertilize, water and seed , then water the lawn area lightly .

    Wait.

Of course you could also add some compost to help.
