i think i just needed something to look forward to 😀

it was a good exercise out in the sun as well, it took about 2-3 hours, i dug about 2.5ft deep, layered the clay and soil with some leaves from raking, and also some compost, very few inches.

i’m going to wait about a month until i start growing so everything breaks down nicely before the first plant.

i plan on using this spot specifically for tomatoes.

any tips for a garden noob?

That’s awesome. Do you have a tomato plants yet? You could start growing it for a month in a pot before putting it in the ground. Do you have a trellis yet, something for the tomatoes to grow onto? I have this super old broken down fence in my yard that I’ve been cutting bits of wire off to bend into cool shapes for my plants to grow on.

Nice job on shoveling the depression away!

Tomatoes are a great start. Get some heirlooms for a good slicing tomato.

    Indeterminate will grow until frost.

Determinate hits their fruiting peak and then die off.

We favor indeterminate for it’s staggering so there’s always some coming instead of one large harvest.

Space them well, tomatoes need it. Clover makes a nice cover crop that can be turned back into the soil for next season.

Enjoy your new found passion and don’t stress, you’re going to do great!

Definitely been there. Do you have a plan in mind for companion planting and spacing?
With the size of the plot in the image, I would not recommend more than 2 at most tomato plants at the far ends away from each other, but you can definitely fill it with companion plants like basil, garlic, and marigold!

If you plan on upgrading your plot with some more advanced research and planning, there’s a few apps out there that could help, I just launched one specifically to solve the lack of integration for sun tracking in the plot area!

Don’t be afraid to prune! Pruning stimulates new growth.

Get into composting, it’ll give you good compost and a use for all the scraps and spoiled food. Now all those bananas you buy and never use aren’t just a waste! At least that’s what I tell myself…

Plant lots of flowers that pollinators will love. Gardening has been an obsession of mine for a few years now and it has helped me with a lot of my personal depression: sweating outdoors, being out in the sun, seeing the beauty you create, harvesting tons of food for the family—it’s so great for your mental health.

I saw your post on r/Minecraft first. I’m glad you came here to get some real gardening advice instead of “you need to get efficiency IV”

  11. Something to look forward to.

Something to be responsible or for.

Something that will reward your work.

Hats off to you mate, pour that energy into that tiny garden!

Get a trellis or make one for the tomatoes to climb on, they’ll be huge by the end of summer.

That’s an awesome idea. Is there a plant that will make you happy? I suggest going to a garden center and hanging out for a while. Something will spark some joy.

Oh, and talk to the staff. Find an old one with a few decades of experience. Some of the best plants won’t look like much right now, but as the summer progresses the get big and very cool. They’ll know.

I’m so excited for your gardening journey (basically your lifelong obsession now 😏)

I didn’t realize how much water tomatoes take so water every day to two days depending on your heat and climate, and there are self-watering systems it might be worth looking into if you tend to travel!

Otherwise yes I agree with others, get a started plant from somewhere and have it grow in a larger pot than it came in while you prep the area for another month! The bigger it gets this time of year the more it will produce!

This is great, although for future reference you might want to be careful digging out brand new garden areas since sometimes there are underground pipes or wiring and they can be EXTREMELY expensive and inconvenient to fix when damaged. This especially goes for the front yard. Usually you can get your lines marked for free, I would look into that for your area if you intend to expand your garden at some point.

Once you start you get increasingly ambitious. Before you know it you’ll have a huge garden!

This was me 3 years ago. Probably the lowest I’ve ever been, went on antidepressants and stopped that after learning more about it. Turned to gardening and literally saved my life.

Touching soil literally boosts dopamine and seeing fruits of labor is the best feeling. Perfect time to get some starters from HD or nurseries right now. Best of luck, lots of help on this sub.

Use tomatoes from the grocery store or your fridge. Congrats 🥳

If you plan on waiting a month before planting (tbh I don’t think you need too but it also can’t hurt) I would suggest you get a nice thick layer of mulch on there to keep the weeds down a bit. Bare ground doesn’t stay bare for very long.
