Had two varieties of mint plant escape a pot into the lawn. I knew that they were probably going to be permanent fixtures when it happened but it did seem like they died over winter. However they of course came up in the grass this spring. Doesn’t really bother me and it’s a rental house so I don’t think I’m gonna do anything to remove it but does serve as a reminder that mint is in fact as invasive as people say it is. Is it eventually going to spread throughout the whole lawn? How quickly does it happen?

Yes it will, depends on how big the yard is. They can easily spread 40-50cm from the edge in all directions every year. Eventually it will be the neighbours problems too.
Yeah mint does that. The nice thing is when you mow it smells nice so there’s that ¯_(ツ)_/¯
RIP to that lawn
Have to tried to eradicate it? It is a rental you will eventually leave. That mint you let escape will have lasting affects after you are gone.
One of my kids planted spearmint in a pot a few years ago. Spearmint now covers an area at least 6’ x 25’. The reason for the shape is that it’s running along the side of our garden. We put down heavy tarps to protect the garden. It’s fine in the yard. Wish it was chocolate mint though!
No “mint.”
Spearmint and/or peppermint.
All mint spreads easily but in my case spearmint has posed a much more immediate threat to my garden than the peppermint, both in pots. I swear the spearmint can teleport. Get on it!
I planted mint in the ground in the back corner of my yard behind a wooded area….
I secretly hope it invades neighbors yard who has been super nasty to us. 😎🙊🙈🙉
Better than grass.
Oh nooooooo, I feel for whoever owns that land!
I lov mint I wouldn’t mind
I hate grass lawns so this is improvement. I bet the bees will like the flowers.
Everybody swears that mint is nearly un-killable and here I am having tried to grow spearmint everywhere (different zones, mind you!) and have killed it every single time. I’m not sure if spearmint (Mentha spicata) is just a different beast but I SO want one and just… Haven’t succeeded. Ever.
I have some areas where mint went feral. Smells nice when I’m mowing that area.
This being said, your attitude as a tenant sucks. It was your plant that got out of the pot, and is now invasive in the yard, and you don’t care because it’s not your house. Something to think about…
somehow my moms had a huge planter full of mint for the past 20 years and none of it has come up in the neighboring planters or nearby grass. she has no idea how lucky she is xD
mint does what it wants lol
Perfect title for your post
Time for a Mow-jito!
Man, this is a good reminder, I really should move my peppermint pot. The pot is lined with barrier fabric, It’s sitting on a concrete slab on top of soil but I can see this happening 😭
Did you notice when the plant has “jumped” or did it just pop up one day?
