Bought our house a couple years ago and this stone work around the tree had already been done. I had another tree that needed some trimming and an arborist told me we should probably dig this out because it shouldn’t be buried that deep. Not sure how long it’s been buried but I’m guessing 8 to 10 years. I looked back on Google Street view and there was nothing around it in 2015 but in the 2021 picture there was. Just wanna get a second opinion before I do this work. Thanks.

If you don’t want it to die… Then yes

It looks to me like the flare is actually exposed if you look at the bottom, which brings up a lot of other questions regarding the roots because unless the brick in that wall was replaced recently the tree is way older than the wall

Good sleuthing on the 2015 picture. Yes, you should remove the retaining wall and restore the soil to the 2015 level if you can. There may be a lot of new tree roots in that soil but I’m guessing much of the soil will come out easily.

Pro: you have free materials to build a raised bed somewhere else in your yard.
