I recently bought a new home with front flower gardens that the previous owner had landscapers put together for them (according to the neighbor at least). They’re very well done and I’ve been weeding but this specific plant has been taking over. I’ll pull it and a few days later the whole corner of the flowerbed is filled with it again. I’m assuming it’s mint of some variety? Can I ever get rid of it or do I just embrace it?

Edit to add: located in Southeast Pennsylvania

    Wild mint

Edit: if thats what it is do whatever you can to get rid of it. Wildly invasive.

Isn’t it mint? Sure looks like mint but that would be obvious to you because of the minty smell

If it’s not spearmint, peppermint or apple mint, then I’m stumped.

(Mint is notoriously hard to remove. I keep mine trimmed so it doesn’t spread further, but I live with it.)

I foresee lots of tea and mojitos in your future

I grow mint near the lilies that the rabbits would eat otherwise.

It’s mint. It’s delicious as tea. Make a syrup with it, just water, sugar and mint leaves and add to a glass of tea or lemonade.

Mint. It will just keep spreading.

I ripped out SO MUCH mint from my garden a few weeks ago. The roots were 2-3′ long and running under other plants. I don’t even know where it came from.

I missed a plant or two, in case a friend wanted it. Now there are several more spreading from those.

Mint, it’s like grass. People constantly plant it and discover too late it’s a ground cover! My great aunt had gardens out of a magazine, she also made this mistake at least once.

Ahh yes the mint keep it at bay while you can

It looks like mint, did you smell it?

    Mmmmmmint.
I purposely grow mint in my yard but I took 12” interlock stones and buried them vertically as a barrier and it has done a great job keeping it contained.

It’s also taking over my garden 🤣
    Good insect repellent though!

Looks like mint to me, they are like bamboo… get them out via the root.

That’s the mints garden, you’re simply a visitor now. Better look up some recipes.

I’m so sorry to inform you, it is mint.

It keeps bugs away and its healthy, pull as needed but don’t go scorched earth, sometimes things in abundance are meant to be used. Start with a sprig in your tea or water with cucumber. The possibilities are endless and that’s what gardening is about.

*or the cocktail party mentioned here (also) in abundance.

Mint. You can dig it up and put some in a pot.

Wait till after the ground is wet, like after a rain, and try to pull all the runners. You won’t be able to get it all the first try / first year.

Shouldn’t be difficult to pull (there’s no deep taproot or anything), just takes patience and perseverance. And definitely get the runners.

Mint. Dry it out for tea, or make mojitos.

  23. Ecodragon1022

Definitely mint. Good luck if you don’t want it growing there. It spreads & always comes back. Best grown in a container. I personally love it

  24. Maleficent_Spray_313

Good luck soldier, mint spreads like the plague

If you’re religious about checking the garden every day and pulling any mint sprouts you see for months on end you might be able to get it out of the garden

Because it is mint. Grab some limes. Time for a mojito

I guess the previous owners figured the only way to deal with mint was to sell.

(if it invades too much, it does smell awesome when mowing)

Lemon mint is a popular drink in Lebanon. Take handfuls of mint (cleaned and washed) with the juice of a couple of lemons and sugar to desired sweetness and blend it well on its own with water or with ice for a refreshing drink.

No es menta! Es hierbabuena:) (Mentha spicata)
Amo cómo huele, y el té moruno es delicioso

Curious…. how could you pull this plant and not realize it’s mint. I can’t brush up against mine without smelling it

  31. brittanylouwhoooo

“Your” garden? Ma’am, that’s the mint’s garden now. It will probably still let you live there though.

  32. Grendal54

I made the mistake of planting several species of mint years ago. Spent the next 3-5 years pulling it out of areas 5-8 feet away from original planting site. Unless contained with a good deep barrier it spreads aggressively. Good luck!
