Hi all, don’t know if this is that place to post this question or not. But my small rural town has replaced recycling programs like 3 times in 4 years and now we have two massive blue bins that are “incompatible” and we don’t use.

Does anyone know if these would be safe to use if I converted them into some kind of mobile compost bins? Do bins need to be a certain grade? And would the blue work well or would I need to try and find some type of safe spray paint?

Thanks for any help!

I am not sure about the safety. I’ll other comment on that. But if you wanted to use them I wouldn’t make them mobile. Drill big holes in the bottom for drainage and worm access. Drill holes up and down the sides for ventilation. I think they’d work well. I know people that use black plastic garbage cans this way.

You could turn them into worm bins. A Hungry Bin is roughly the same as your blue bin.

I used a similar sized can for about a year and the major problem i had was that I had trouble turning the bottom of the can and getting water all the way through. It would be better as a compost finishing bin to put in after it’s most of the way to dirt.
