If you’ve invested time, effort and money into making your garden patio look its absolute best, you’ll want to know how to maintain it properly. While the best patio cleaners and pressure washers can certainly assist you with this cleaning job, you might be surprised to learn that they’re not your only options.

In fact, another approach has proved hugely popular on social media, and the cleaning product needed is probably already sitting beneath your sink right now.

While you may use Fairy and Persil powder laundry detergent to refresh your clothes, many social media-savvy homeowners have begun using these products in their gardens as well.

According to paving specialists at The Driveway Experts, washing powder can eliminate stains as well as moss to make your patio “look brand new”.

They said: “Washing powder does a great job at cleaning block paving. It gets rid of tough stains, dirt, and debris. The chemicals in it also kill moss and algae that grow on paving.

“Washing powder is great for cleaning paving, and it’s budget-friendly. But use it carefully. The mix can tackle tough stains and make the paving look new again.

“Yet, always try it on a hidden spot first. This way, you check it won’t harm the paving material, especially if it’s a sensitive natural stone paver.”

Before cleaning your patio with washing powder, make sure you prepare the space properly. Remove any outdoor furniture to prevent damage, reports the Mirror.

Then sweep the paving to clear away large amounts of dirt. Begin by mixing washing powder with warm water in a bucket.

Pour this mixture over the paving and leave it to sit for around 10 minutes, allowing the chemicals to break down grime and stubborn stains.

Once the solution has had time to work, take a soft-bristled brush and gently scrub the paving in a “diagonal way”. Take care not to damage the jointing compound between the blocks.

Finally, thoroughly rinse the paving with clean water to wash away any remaining dirt and detergent residue.

For particularly grimy areas, you may need to repeat this process several times. It is also worth inspecting the jointing compound and topping it up where necessary, as this helps to keep your block paving both structurally sound and visually appealing.
