Wisteria is a glorious plant that can brighten up any garden with its gorgeous purple hues. However, it turns out that it’s not just purple hues that wisteria blooms into; in fact, you can also yield gorgeous white flowers for your garden.
Known as wisteria alba, a Japanese variety of the flower, gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish pointed out that this variety is even more spectacular, as it can blossom twice a year, unlike the classic wisteria, which blooms once. Ish said: “And an even special thing about this is it doesn’t just flower once a year, it flowers twice.”
Wisteria alba is a slow-growing flower, but once it establishes after two or three years, it’s an “incredibly vigorous” plant. It can grow up to one to three metres a year.

To help the flowers bloom, make sure they’re positioned in a spot that gets plenty of sunshine. However, the key to getting wisteria alba blooming bigger and better is the addition of tomato feed, according to Ish.
When you see buds forming on the plant, add a little bit of tomato feed to the soil once a week for around four weeks. Ish said: “As a result, with a high potash feed, it encourages these flowers to get even bigger and even more abundant, so it’s absolutely amazing.
“And if you want that second flower, what you want to do when these are done is wait for all the flower spikes to finish, cut them straight off at the base and then give it a really good fertiliser with some manure or some slow-release feed at the bottom.
“Leave it for a few months, and around about summertime, you’ll get that amazing second flush of flowers.”

If your wisteria has already produced some buds, you can encourage them to start flowering by giving them some tomato feed once a week for four weeks. Ish explained tomato feed will help to increase potassium levels in the soil to help the flowers bloom.
Ish said in a previous video: “Tomato feed massively increases the yields of flowers and vegetables. So, it’s a little secret weapon for you.”
Tomato feed has a high level of potassium in it that helps boost flowering and fruiting, enhances plant resilience against disease, and maximises yields. Not only is it good for wisteria, but it’s also ideal for anyone growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and other flowering plants in the garden.
Not only is the fertiliser rich in potassium, but it also contains a generous amount of other nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium. Nitrogen can help encourage healthy foliage, while phosphorus targets root health, and magnesium and sulphur for overall plant health.
Another benefit of using a high potash fertiliser is the protection against plant diseases and environmental stresses. When it comes to pruning wisteria alba, it’s a good idea to prune it in late winter, around January to February, to help keep it under control.
