IDENTIFIED! Equisetum hyemale. Rough horsetail.

I pass by a patch of this every day. From afar it looked like wild asparagus but the tips don’t. Finally got to grab one today and I’m at a loss.

It’s hollow, not hard but sturdy, stalk has ridges, the top looks like it’s sprouting more, i have not seen a flower in the months i’ve seen it but it’s possible i could have missed it. Someone said it was bamboo but i really don’t think it is.

Found in central Louisiana, not in anyone’s yard so it must be wild or naturally occurring. If I can plant it in my yard that would be cool lol

TIA!

Yes, horsetail reed. Also called scouring rush.

Don’t plant it in your yard. From what I’ve read it spreads like crazy and it’s hard to get rid of. It’s a cool plant though and I’ve seen people put some in planters/pots.

If you can find it when you’re camping it’s great for scouring your cast-iron skillets after campfire cooking. Also called scouring rushes.
