This is my existing garden bed and an idea of what I want to eventually achieve. I’ve got weed matting which is covered with white stones. I want to remove the plastic weed matting, maybe put in a layer of mulch, a drip irrigation system then put the white stones back on top. I’ve had the white stones for years and they still look good so would like to make use of them. When planting I’ll just remove a surrounding perimeter of stones around the plant. Would this all work?

It would work yes but would it be functional? Easy to clean? Stones create a very hot microclimate in sunny conditions and don’t break down into beneficial material for soil health unlike woody/ fibrous mulch or composts. White stones get dirty and look very ugly when messy. I’d recommend using woody mulch that will help your plants grow long term and be useful for the soil!

Definitely remove weed mat. As a gardener I can say it rarely works and just releases microplastics everywhere!
Nice though, I like the vision

I’ve made this mistake before. White stone mulches look amazing on day one, then turn to shit when nature takes its course. Leaves, dirt, everything will fall on them and make them look terrible, and you will regret it. Just use an organic mulch.

Terrible idea – don’t do it OP. Stones are great for the first few weeks but they aren’t great for plants and are a nightmare to maintain long term.
