BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) – A cold snap in the forecast has garden centers taking precautions to protect seasonal plants.

Katy Hood with Rosby Garden Center in Brooklyn Heights said they’ve had to bring all of their annuals inside to protect them from the cooler temperatures.

“With all of our perennials out front they’ve been hardened off so they can all stay out there but the annuals are still too tender,” Hood said. “The ground is way too cold for anybody to plant.”

19 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Jason Nicholas said April has been warmer than normal.

“When we talk about April we’re looking at the fourth warmest at least right now on record in Cleveland a lot of warm days and then you get everything juiced up ready to go because spring is here and then you get cold air coming in with those cold temperatures this weekend, frost likely, and that could cause some harm to the plants,” Jason said.

Jason advises Mother’s Day is typically the safest time to start putting plants in the ground.

“Soil temperatures start to warm up, air temperatures sometimes may lag, but we normally always advise waiting until Mother’s Day,” he said.

Hood said there are ways to save delicate flowers already purchased.

“If you do already have them in the ground or you’ve bought them, cover them up with a frost blanket, newspaper, towels to protect the flowers and they’re little root systems,” Hood said. “If you haven’t put them in the ground yet bring them in and take them out everyday for sun if we have a nice day.”
