Nebraska Zone 5.
I need help with my backyard situation. We have a relatively small yard especially with the ground height deck. So the yard portion is limited, and we have two big dogs. Our 85lb wolf, gsd, husky mix and a 75lb lab, husky, pit mix. They love to run around and play and dig. On top of that we have a bunny that likes to live under the deck and they love to chase and kill the bunny. We’ve had bunny massacres unfortunately.
Our wolf husky mix likes to dig under the fence and escape so my husband bought some metal spikes to put in the ground along the fence line to stop her. It also requires a lot of frequent cleanup as it’s a small area for dog poo.
So with all of the above said, I need a functioning backyard for my dogs, myself, and hopefully any critters that venture in here. Two years ago I tried to start by planting wildflowers but I just used some bag I bought off amazon and I barely got any flowers but I got an insane amount of what I think is lamb’s quarter/wild spinach. Initially I thought cool, wild spinach I’ll just let it grow. Well it took over the entire yard basically. It got extremely tall. So then I read you have to hand pull it to get the root, so I literally hand pull all of them in the yard to get rid of them. Last year I put down clover and grass seed but nothing took. This year, I’ve put down clover and grass seed, tri clover seed, pasture feed seed, milorganite, top soil, and lots and lots of water.
It seems to be taking in some spots, but none of the clover seems to be growing just the grass. I also planted an eastern redbud tree, a Japanese willow bush, an echinacea bulb, some other bush, and some snapdragons. I also have raked to loosen up the soil. How can I get something to cover the dirt spots that will grow here? I’m open to wildflowers, clover, ground coverage plants, grass, as long as it is safe for myself and my dogs.
