Hello! I have this huge hackberry in my backyard in Austin, TX. I noticed this fungi growing at the base and used Google image search and it had some scary things to say about it. I thought I'd run it by you all and see what you have to say about it.

Once the fruiting body emerges, the tree is completely infected and is going to die
Depending on the severity of the fungal infection, it can be treated for the rest of its life. But in reality, its days are probably numbered and the owner should plan for it to fall unexpectedly in a storm or something.
Brittle Cinder?
Kretzchmaria.. very very bad
Very aggressive, it’s already showing on multiple sides of the trunk. Trees with this infection tend to snap at the base while still looking healthy up top.
Not treatable. Remove the tree
Hackberry trees are notorious for easily falling over even without the infection. When the ice storm hit in austin a few years ago all my hackberry’s went down. Any time I see a hackberry near a fence i feel sorry for the fence. Kind of trash tree. Adam’s Apple tree service is great.
I wonder if the fence created an environment for the mushrooms to thrive in? Best of luck op!
Seems like you have a griddling root ?
This is why I love watching this sub. I grew up seeing this fungus on trees and would’ve never thought anything of it. But now I know
Condolences OP, hackberries are awesome
