Yesterday it was 75°C, i added some grass, water (+piss) and mixed it. Today it went to 80°C, i tried to find a warmer spot but couldn't… i added some fresh leaves, mixed it again and i'll see tomorrow…
I don't suppose the outside temperature has any important effect but for the information, it was 22°C

I'm curious about how warm it could get… any idea?

Wouldn't the bacterias eventually die?

Dang. That’s crazy. Isn’t it actually nearing the temperature that kills the bacteria that makes the pile hot??

  2. Yeah I don’t think you want it that hot. Over 160 and you are killing off the microbes that decompose the material.

not only are you killing the good bacteria in the compost pile, you run the risk of starting a pile fire… good luck to whatever combustible material you have nearby

Good idea to turn it at this point to bleed off and mix around some of that heat. The main “issue” with a very hot bin is you can get a big pocket where the heat and everything is just right and decomposing much faster that the other areas and gets more finished faster. But that already happens under normal conditions to a lesser extent and your not usually getting homogenous compost without turning anyways.

It’s an ok problem to have because yeah, you’ve overshot “ideal” but it’s easy to just mix it and it will probably come back down to “ideal” after you mix since some nitrogen has been used up already.

I would add some water or something. Some greens and turning it over

Just compost and don’t ask the internet for confirmation. Do your thing. Dont catch fire.
