The previous owners of this house planted this river birch ~20 years ago. It's huge, taller than the house. I plan on trimming some limbs so it's not touching the roof but I'm wondering if it would be better to get it cut down if it will damage my foundation. It's planted exactly 20ft away from the corner of the house. Zone 7 in NC

You’re fine. River birch roots aren’t particularly aggressive or problematic. They spread wide when Searching for water but generally aren’t going to be a problem when planted that far away.
nope
What do you think it’s gonna do? Trees don’t rip through concrete. So the answer is no
No
Also remove all that landscape fabric. That’s probably another reason why those roots are searching so far. Nothing is happy growing under a plastic tarp.
My neighbor would say Yes … but I’m still not cutting it down.
So, to the arborists here, in general, how close is too close to a structure?
Is there a rule of thumb– so many feet beyond the tree’s canopy or something like that?
