Nurturing plants, spending time with neighbors and enjoying the fruits of your harvest at the table are just a few of the benefits anyone can gain from participating in Mosaic Community Land Trust’s garden program, based in Pottstown.

The benefits of participating in the Mosaic Community Land Trust’s Garden program for older adults are especially meaningful, according to the nonprofit’s executive director, Tracy Purdy.
“Gardening provides gentle physical activity, which supports mobility and overall health, while also offering mental health benefits through time spent outdoors and in nature,” Purdy said.
Social connection
Just as important is the social connection they can reap through tending to their plots at various locations in Pottstown.
“Many of our older gardeners value the opportunity to interact in a low-pressure environment regularly with others,” Purdy said.
Time spent in the garden with others tending to their nearby plots helps reduce isolation and fosters a sense of belonging.
“We consistently see that the act of nurturing plants goes hand in hand with personal well-being,” Purdy said. “There’s a rhythm and purpose to gardening that resonates deeply, especially for those who may be retired or looking for meaningful ways to stay engaged in their community.”
Accessibility for gardeners with mobility issues
Over the last three seasons, they began replacing regular raised beds with 36-inch-high Vego beds to aid accessibility for their gardeners with mobility issues.
Gardening plots are always in high demand, particularly as we get closer to the growing season.
“Each year, our garden plots fill quickly, and this season is no exception,” Purdy said. “We do have limited availability remaining in The Mosaic Garden and The Chestnut Street Garden, and we encourage anyone interested to reach out soon.”
While Mosaic’s mission is to serve the Pottstown community in various ways, they also have needs as well in order to sustain themselves. There are many different ways you can support them.
“Our greatest needs on the gardening front are continued community support, volunteers, and resources to help us maintain our shared green spaces,” Purdy said. “As interest in local food and community gardening grows, so does the demand for accessible, well-maintained plots and educational programming about gardening.”
Expanding opportunities for residents to learn
This growing season, Purdy said they are especially excited to continue strengthening their permaculture practices and expanding opportunities for residents to learn about sustainable gardening, soil health, and food production.
“We have held workshops in garden planning, beekeeping, seed starting, and in May, we will have a workshop about creating ecosystems in our own yards and how to attract beneficial insects,” she said. “We’re also deepening partnerships through the regional Home Garden Contest, which encourages residents of all ages and experience levels to grow at home and take pride in their spaces, whether that’s a backyard, front porch, or a few pots in a kitchen window.”
Grow connection
Ultimately, Mosaic’s goal is not just to grow food, but to grow connection, resilience, and long-term access to healthy living environments.

“Participants benefit in a variety of ways,” Purdy said. “At the most basic level, they gain access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food, but beyond that, our gardeners often tell us that the experience provides a sense of ownership, accomplishment, and pride.
“There’s something powerful about tending your own space and watching it grow over time.”
Equally important for them is the sense of community that has been built through their offerings.

“Our gardens bring together people from different backgrounds and generations, creating opportunities for neighbors to connect, share knowledge, and support one another,” Purdy said. “For many, it becomes a meaningful part of their weekly routine and a source of stability and joy.”
