8 months ago this tree and three others were vandalised in the park near my house, stripped all the way around, last photo is from today, no signs of dead branches and tree is seemingly ok.
I’ve seen this on several occasions. I keep trying to tell people that girdling isn’t necessarily a death sentence.

It looks like maybe the tree wasn’t actually stripped all the way through the cambium to dead wood and the tree is scarring and healing. A truly girdled tree has no connection of the cambium above and below the damage, and unless the tree can heal a pathway between the two it is a death sentence. If it’s just the bark that’s stripped away that’s not quite girdled.

Yeah they do. It just won’t happen instantly. Girdled trees unless you do bridge graft are goners once the reserves in the upper bit run out.

It takes 3 to 5 years for a tree to die from damage.

Trees can live up to 3 years after being girdled.
