Amazon’s solar lights have a rustic lantern design, with a lampshade that projects a water ripple pattern when lit. To set up, turn on the switch, connect the pole and push the stake into the ground.
If the ground is hard, it is recommended to dig a hole first. Each unit can stay lit for up to eight hours, the brand claims. They promise to automatically turn on at dusk and turn off at dawn.

For other options, B&Q has a set of modern-looking SolarCentre Lavenham Solar Garden Lights for £29.99. The pack of four give off a warm, glowing light. They light up automatically each night and turn off automatically at dawn.
Elsewhere, Next sells a fairytale-inspired set of 12 Solar Mushroom Lights for £20. Place in flower beds or underneath trees and shrubbery for a unique garden feature.
Amazon’s Gigalumi Solar Lights have more than 7,500 customer reviews and an overall rating of 4.4. One person said: “I adore these. They have made my garden bed/front yard look wonderful. The best part… they last and can withstand all weather types, from extreme heat to ice and frozen temps. The brightness is just the right amount. I purchased the more ‘yellow’ light colour. I have recently purchased a second set because I love them so much and wanted to add more to the yard.”
Another happy fan remarked: “These have been absolutely great over the last 18 months or so. The glow isn’t strong after a dark winter day, but still enough to give some visibility along my path, and they’ve survived some awful weather! Really pleased with this purchase.”

One customer rated them four stars, as they were disappointed with the brightness they emit. They noted: “Not as bright as I thought they would be, I have other solar lights which are much brighter.”
A fourth buyer had a better experience with the Gigalumi Solar Lights, penning: “These have been fab. With only a small amount of sunlight, they last all evening. Worked all the way through winter. Look great along the cottage garden path.”
Someone else added: “These lights look amazing, with the light diffused in a star pattern. They also stay on all night (not sure what the winter illumination hours would be). They also have replaceable rechargeable batteries, rather than being sealed units and so that is a bonus. One important point, though, is to ensure you dig a hole first if the ground is hard, otherwise the stakes will snap as they are quite fragile.”
