My neighbor asked me to remove this vine from this tree for him to keep it from dying. I guess this tree has been around his whole life and it has sentimental value to him. We're located in Middle Tennessee. He says it's not poisonous but idk. It does have some pretty thick stems the deeper in you go. Any advice would be super helpful!!

Do not try to remove this from the tree, it will pull bark away. Get some brushkiller before you dive in. You want to cut the main climbing stem(s) a few inches above the ground, and then make a second cut of the upper stem(s) that leaves a good sized gap from the lower cut. Paint the cut ends with the brushkiller. Cut as many stems back as you can and give the brushkiller treatment to the fresh cuts. You’ll have to keep treating this monster.
Let the climbing stuff die and dry out.
