hi! I just bought this house and was wondering if I should be concerned this is bamboo as it looks like it or whatever that is in the pics that were listed?

It’s a Banana. You can cut off the dead leaves with scissors.

It’s a banana tree. You can cut down the dead leaves, but the trees will come back. Before each tree dies, it puts out offshoots under the soil. In the spring, they turn into baby banana trees rising from right next to the mama. They grow really fast and tall and can be a really cool tropical vibe! If they are not your cup of tea, you may need to dig them up to get the roots and offshoots. If you keep them and they get big enough, then you may get bananas big enough to eat!

    Edit: typo

Thats a banana. Let them grow they will grow fast! I have several in Nova Scotia

  4. FYI since you mentioned NC this is most like Musa basjoo, japanese fiber banana. It’s the most cold hardy of bananas ans a gorgeous foliage plant, but don’t count on any edible bananas. They can flower and produce some fruit, but they won’t be eating bananas. For the flower it will need the stalk to survive fairly well over winter, leaving the leaves on acts as a mulch and protects it and can start to emerge again from high up, but each winter is different so may die to ground some years and start 10ft up others.

Banana tree. The perfect reason to own a machete. 😁

This is why people used to say banana trees “walked”.

Beautiful Musa. They die back over winter, leaving behind dry leaves. You can cut these as soon as it gets warmer and a new trunk will appear.

Musa generally needs much water and fertilizer, as they grow so fast and tall.
