Stop and smell the flowers: Peony Festival blooms in Victoria

Victoria is going to be in full bloom this spring with a festival boasting more than 7,000 peonies coming to town.

The festival will open with a cocktail-style evening launch party dubbed Night in Bloom on May 28, at the Atrium. The ticketed event will give guests a photo opportunity with decorative installations and peonies. It will feature floral-inspired cocktails, food, and a live DJ.

Organized by a partnership between Ripple Events, Poppies Floral Art, and Bespoke Blossoms, the free festival will open to the public on May 29 and 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Atrium. Visitors will be able to walk around, take pictures, and order the peonies they like.

“When guests come to visit us, it’s not just about coming to a market and buying flowers and going home. It’s really about stepping into this really magical space that we’ve created where it feels like they’re in a field of peonies, but they’re actually inside in a space,” owner and CEO of Ripple events, Cassie LeBlanc said.

She added that a special feature of this event is joining hands with local floral designers to create art installations at the venue.

“People keep asking, and I keep saying it’s total floral abundance. It’s hard to even envision and describe to people how many flowers it’s going to be, but it’s a lot,” LeBlanc said.

She added that the event will include 300 buckets of peonies and that they have already ordered close to 7,000 peonies. They will also feature other flowers, bringing the total of flowers close to 10,000 at the event.

“It’s going to be hopefully something that brings a lot of joy to people when they visit it, and we really just want to create an experience that people get excited about, gets people out in the community, and that makes them feel good,” she said.

Ripple Events, along with Bespoke Blossoms in Victoria, saw a strong desire in the Victoria community to have more unique experiences, and a pull for creativity after the city opened following the pandemic. That is how the duo came up with the idea to create the event.

“Everyone that I talk to about it says, I can’t wait to come. I love peonies…I think that not only is the community excited about having an event, but they’re excited about peonies specifically.”

Peonies are a short-blooming flower, and LeBlanc said the event will be the same.

“We’re going to pop up. It’s going to be this magical experience for a few days, and then it’s going to disappear, and hopefully we can bring it back and make it an annual thing in the city.”
