i only buy miracle gro when they have the giant potting mix bags at costco, and on sale. its the only bagged soil i know that’s primarily coconut coir. everything else is just super woody. i dunno if its just unfinished or what. its garbage.

I must live in a weird corner of the country because I have never had issues with it.

Is the miracle grow organic soil any better? I bought about six bags of it for a raised bed and didn’t find any plastic. It seems pretty good.

  4. SupremelyUneducated

The stuff at the local dump is generally better and a lot cheaper. If that’s still a thing. The diy is better for the soul and the soil.

  5. Agile-Pay-211

I buy it all the time and have for years and years without any issues at all. Maybe it’s because I just get their Garden Soil? That would be weird…

Make it yourself if you need to: top soil, local compost, coir, vermiculite/perlite.

i prefer foxfarms any day. miracle gro gave me fungus gnats.

  8. WelshWolf93

Its called miracle grow because it’s a miracle anything grows in it

I just finished planting some new babies out back using a bag of miracle grow. I didn’t see anything other than nice clean soil in the bag. I just finished 3 other bags recently, same thing, good healthy smell, nice soil texture etc. not one single piece of plastic etc. Strange.

ScottsMiracle-Gro has been the exclusive agent for marketing and distributing Roundup-branded non-selective herbicide products in the consumer lawn and garden market for Monsanto, which was acquired by Bayer in 2018.

Bayer has significant lobbying ties and alignment with the Trump administration’s agenda, particularly regarding efforts to gain legal immunity for its Roundup weedkiller. The administration has backed Bayer in Supreme Court litigation, with officials meeting with the company’s CEO and utilizing lobbyists with close administration ties.

Evidence indicates strong financial and lobbying ties between Bayer-Monsanto and the second Trump administration. In 2025, Bayer spent over $9 million on lobbying, employing numerous firms with close ties to the administration to influence officials at the EPA, USDA, and White House, primarily seeking immunity from Roundup cancer lawsuits.

The reason it’s called that is because it’s a miracle if anything grows in it.

Fox farms for the win. Like the owner of my local nursery says, Miracle Gro is the best at marketing. And that’s the only thing they are good at.

It’s not bad. I started out with it in large pots and grew huge peppers. It’s motivating for beginners to see such large plants for your first time. Not sure where you get plastic from…I do see larger sticks in it these past years, but I see that issue with all brands now to keep costs down and sizes the same. Reeelaaaxxxxx.

It used to be good like 20 years ago – now it is the worst soil on the market – ALDI’s $2.99 bag of potting soil is better – the best i have found is the Tractor Supply store brand – at $4.99 a bag, it is fantastic.

My garden soil is one part peat moss or coconut coir, one part manure or compost, one part perlite. Cheaper and better than miracle gro.

  16. Thee_Sinner

Look for a local soil supply seller. Place near me has no minimum for delivery and 2 yards of compost delivered would cost about 2/3 as much as buying the same in bags and hauling it myself.

  17. PetrusScissario

You can smell how fake Miracle-Gro is. It doesn’t smell like soil or compost or anything occurring in nature.

  18. PlankTheSilent

I buy the absolute cheapest shit at home depot. Woody as hell. Buy a single bag of pearlite. Get a couple free yards of compost from a nearby stables/winery.

I bought FF once upon a time, but aint no way im filling a whole bed at 20 bucks per CF

  19. Red-Truck-Steam

Miracle Gro because it’s a miracle anything would grow in it

  20. ShutInLurker

I use Miracle grow for outdoor plants only bc of the gnats and it’s cheap – my local soil is mostly clay. I needed cheap to break it up. It works wonderful – plants are huge and healthy. I potted 2 spider plants with MG….i have been battling gnats for 5 months.

  21. bkedsmkr

I have 9 chickens and so much compost idk what to do with it. I haven’t had to buy soil in years.

  22. Chazz_Matazz

Mom, the militant organic gardeners are posting on Reddit again.

  23. XcuseMeMisISpeakJive

I’ve never had any problems with mine. Zero issues. My roses are the best they’ve been in years thanks to adding the garden soil,  despite the horrible heat and drought. I think this must be heavily dependent on the area you’re in. It’s a godsend where I live.

  24. meme_de_la_cream

Idk my tomatoes and peppers love it lol

  25. GrownRegulator2

OMG I thought I was the only one seeing all the perlite chunks 😭 they drive me nuts lol

  26. Living_Olive_3473

Difference between garden soil and potting soil.

  27. toomuchoversteer

I just go to a local landscaping supply. Its like half the price for a bag of dirt

  28. iBlockAds99

Agreed, cut myself multiple times on the glass and metal bits in it.

  29. GoatLegRedux

It was never good. The plastic thing of late just makes it that much worse.
