It’s the middle of April here at Okarga Farms, and after what feels like endless rain, the garden is lush, green, and very much alive—even if I haven’t been able to get much planting done.

In today’s garden tour, I’m taking you through the property to share what’s thriving, what’s been set back by a late freeze, and how the garden is evolving during this particularly wet stretch of spring. From blooming salvias and viburnum to emerging peonies and fresh foliage, there’s plenty to take in—even between the rain showers.

We’ll also look at some of the realities of gardening in Oklahoma—freeze damage on roses, challenges with drainage, and what happens when fruit trees are caught at just the wrong moment in the season. It’s not always perfect, but it’s always a learning experience.

Along the way, I’ll share a few planting plans for the weeks ahead, including new additions, a developing garden path project, and a first look at a space you haven’t seen before here at the farm.
Spring is moving quickly, and even with the setbacks, there’s so much promise just around the corner.
I’m so glad you’re here in the garden with me.

  1. Your puppy was looking like he was living his best life. The beginning of video he was in the background in the yard just chillin. Loved to see that. 😊

  2. Chip, another great video! I love the landscaping with the lily of the valley! My mother years ago planted it when I was growing up. I can still smell the fragrance and the sweet white flowers. That sure brings back precious memories! Thanks so much for sharing your farm with us! So excited to see the flagstone pathways. 👍🏻👍🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️

  3. Your gardens are looking beautiful. Love seeing the new growth and I love Lily of the valley too! I have a large patch of it.

  4. I’m in River Valley, Arkansas. A couple weeks ago I purchased an Eastern Snowball Viburnum from a local nursery, she had around 6 of them, none of them had leafed out yet, there’s nodes swelling all over it and the scratch test shows green in the stems. I’ve planted it in about 6 hours of sun along with some plant tone. Have you ever seen some take this long to break dormancy? She said they had been sitting outside, not in a greenhouse, they also were in a really shaded area, maybe the freeze we had has done this? Thank you for your videos, I always learn something. Your gardens are beautiful

  5. Lilly of the valley are toxic to cats and that's why I got rid of it in my garden. Just brushing against it the pollen gets on their fur and they can accidentally ingest it when they give themselves a bath.

  6. I so look forward to your Saturday morning videos! The lily of the valley are adorable, and the scent is heavenly. I remember picking the tiny stems for my mom and she put the little bouquets in a glass toothpick holder! I have a Korean spice viburnum also. It’s about 15 years old, at least 15 ft tall and makes the whole yard smell so sweet! I can’t wait to see the butterflies and hummingbirds here in Michigan! Thanks for sharing your garden!! ☀️☀️☀️

  7. Hello, and I love the show and live in Stillwater. I've wanted to plant a Pyracantha for a long time, and thought about creating an Espalier, but, I actually have a space for two on either side of a south/east window. I didn't know Pyranthia could grow upright like your two bushes. What is the variety
of your upright growing Pyracantha? Thank you, kindly!

  8. It’s my understanding you can prune mulberries several times in a season and after each prune they will fruit. I think it’s something that they do in India/Asia? I’d research it because you may still be able to get a harvest.

  9. So many gorgeous plants. The candy corn spirea is already beautiful – I can’t wait to see it in bloom. I’m in middle TN and our forecast looks like your rain is headed our way. I sure hope so. Our April showers have been almost non-existent so I’ve worried about our May flowers.

  10. Oh, I love those Pyracantha! I've never even heard of them. Is that the Mohave, Firethorn? I'm trying to find it online. I've been looking for something evergreen and conical for morning sun. They're just beautiful!

  11. I really enjoy your the garden walk abouts you post. It reminds me so much of the yard I grew up with in NC. Of course now living Georgia, I love hearing your Southern accent.

  12. I can remember the Snowball from my childhood, my Gra ndma's neighbor had a beautiful one!!! The flowers on your vine were Glorious, I might grow one climbing up my bird feeder. I love that Colonel was following you everywhere throughout your garden,he brought a smile to my face. Have a great weekend,Chip.

  14. First time coming across your video and your landscape is very nice. I am wondering, is that mulch around your plants?

  15. Your garden radiates happiness! You have a good eye for pleasing combinations and placement. Looking forward to seeing what develops this season. 😊

  16. Chip, you are in the best place and the best business for you as EVERY plant is "one of my favorites". Your home, grounds and garden center are inspiring as you include the heart-swells as well as the heart-aches which encourage others to carry on and not get discouraged when harsh realities occur. So generous of you to share 💚
