Its got some rub damage from leaning on the support wire in the nursery. Looks like its been planted for a few years. Its probably fine.

    From Google!

Distinctive Bark: The Chinese elm is known for its exfoliating bark, which sheds in patches of gray, green, orange, and brown, creating a tapestry effect.  Trunk Damage: The vertical damage shown on the trunk may be due to “sunscald,” where bark dies after extreme temperature changes, or “rub damage” from nursery support wires.

Not sure exactly what happened to it, but it seems to have recovered pretty well. Could be freeze damage from a few years back. Can you scratch at the inner part of the trunk? I kinda looks like the inside is deadwood and the new growth is encompassing it. If that’s the case, it could cause issues with heart rot later on.
